Good Schmutz, aka Things I Found and Love, vol. 10
PENIS TERRAZZO, GLASS COWBOY, CHAIN TRAY.
Welcome to Good Schmutz, my monthly roundup of cool design things. This edition is a little different as I’ve added a new section at the end: SHOPPING REX. And by shopping recs/rex, I mean things you can actually buy and for not insane amounts of money ($30-$700).
#1: Love at first click! Is this not THE perfect storage system?? This is a 1970s unit by Derk Jan De Vries for the Italian company Maisa di Seveso. It is entirely modular. The one below is up for grabs on Lostine. But what’s brilliant is that you could track down a set and keep adding individual units to it. 1stdibs also has lots of sets and individual pieces.
#2: Designers, you’re going to want to bookmark this one. I sent this IG account a message: “Who are you? This is insane. I bow down, king.” They replied: “Ha! Thanks! I’m Glass cowboy.” Glass Cowboy, aka Ben Tuna (great name) is an absolute master of stained glass. The image below is for a walk-in closet.
#3: Anastasio Home has been on my radar for a while; they’re known for marblegoods, namely their romantic trays. But my hands-down favorite item is the Chain Tray, which is inspired by the cutest thing: Gabriela Anastasio’s grandmother used to sneak her little gold chain bracelets as gifts, and this motif reminds her of that secret. On June 3rd, Anastasio is launching a collection with fashion stylist Tania Sarin. For early access, sign up here. #partner
#4: There are not a lot of folks out there who do “small space” furniture with real innovation other than making things that are, well, small. I have to give kudos to newcomer Riffmade for capitalizing on a simple concept: storage pieces with curtains. Because sometimes you need a place to stuff your junk and cover it up.
#5: Okay, seriously. No one should ever have a white bathtub. Ever! YSG sourced this yellow beauty from The Water Monopoly (included in Schmatta’s Guide to Renovation Sources). But it’s really the combo of the butter tub with that immaculate wallpaper by Schumacher.
#6: This grandma has miniature homes embedded in her walls. Execution: Flawless.
