Good Schmutz aka Things I Found and Love, vol. 7
New collabs, a great lamp deal, and shirt curtains.
Howdy from NYC! We’re here for Thanksgiving and I had absolutely no plans to do anything design-y…except I just remembered that the Cooper Hewitt is open again! Anyhow, here is a Good Schmutz to distract you from any impending uncomfortable political discussions at your family dinner.
#1: Designer crush: Pauline Borgia, Paris-based architectural designer. She uses a lot of light blue and wood in her designs and I’m telling you, this combo is coming for 2025.
#2: Did you know that there is a kid-sized version of King’s 1977 sofa? You know now!
#3: I’ve been aware of the Loftie alarm clock, however I didn’t know (until recently) that they make this modern/slightly industrial lamp that’s been really helpful for my bedtime routine (and my daughter’s). The base emits light in tons of color options, although my fave is the Night setting. Super relaxing. Style-wise, kind of an interesting juxtaposition in our softer, girlier bedroom. Use code SCHMATTA20 for 20% off orders over $125 valid through 12/31. #partner
#4: I adore this new floral wallpaper from Living Quarters. (Brands, I maybe want to do a hallway refresh so if you do wallpaper or lighting…I am listening.)
#5: Lighting artist James Cherry (someone please steal this name for a character in a novel) has created some new works for Spartan Shop. Have y’all noticed how insanely $$$ the lighting category has become? I mean, there’s some really interesting stuff going on, but wooooowheeee!
#6: Brooklinen x KULE. Fun little fact — I was Kule’s very first copywriter some thousand years ago.
#7: Areaware x Sarah Burns jewelry box. I LOVE it. I want one for Hanukkah (hint hint, husband yes this is a test to see if you actually read this newsletter).
#8: I really like these pillows! I saw them in person at Litt Concept House in Sherman Oaks and they are are delightfully oversized.
#9: A hand. painted. sofa.
#10: Pam Shamshiri x Nanz Hardware. Some interesting stuff in this collection, although I am sure it is all disgustingly expensive.
#11: Here is a room I like:
#12: Lighting, again. New Eny Lee Parker fabric-wrapped pendant. Sooooo good.
#13: Marcin Rusak Studio! This dude makes some crazy (good) stuff; all with a very considered incorporation of nature. The cabinet below is made of a “flower-infused resin.” It’s like Jurassic Park and De Gournay had a cabinet baby.
#14: We have this linen throw from Parachute in the Marine hue. Not to be super Black Friday-y, but it’s $87 down from $189.
#15: Catskills-based Loose Parts makes thoughtful/modern/handmade furniture and is female-founded!
#16: Lay Lo recently tapped designer Brigette Romanek to create a small assortment of dog beds and pet throws.
#17: I recently discovered the works of designer and artist Caroline Zimbalist, who uses bioplastics to create these slightly spooky, otherworldly vases. L.A. folks: I saw her stuff at one of the little stores inside the Marta complex. I’m not sure if it’s permanent or a popup…
#18: St. Louis-based gallery Forsyth collabed with Venice-based Murano glassware brand Laguna B to create a vase adorned with a daisy motif. It’s got kind of a ‘90s vibe.
#19: These dog beds are making the rounds on IG, and I gotta say…definitely a lewk.
#20: Bliss & Mischief bedding available at The Six Bells — this cotton sateen duvet is so, so soft and the delicate rose motif is hand block printed. I’m a huge fan!
#21: Another one making the rounds on Insta (that I am head-over-heels for): Marseille-based embroidery artist Sara Espeute made this shirt curtain for an exhibition. Right now it’s a one-off, but, luckily, she says, it will be available in 2025.
#22: Just putting this out there, but I think mini cabinets need to happen in 2025.
#23: Maison Balzac has come out with bottles for hand soap. I mean, a true Schmatta moment would be if you bought one and filled it with Dawn. Please do.
And now, a request from you all! We are on the hunt for a new flatware set. Would love to hear your suggestions in the comments. Open to all styles, vintage or new!
