Good Schmutz aka Things I Found and Love vol. 2
22 new discoveries in decor, furniture, wallpaper, local happenings, and more.
A few things first!
If you don’t know me: I am Leonora (or Leo) and I’m the former co-founder/editor-in-chief/VP of Hunker, a design/shelter pub. I’ve been writing about design for seven years. I’ve also written a book about Gen X and Gen Y culture.
I started Schmatta a year ago. It’s my outlet for discussing my passion (design/furniture/interiors/some nostalgia) in a way that differs from trad media. It’s curious, chaotic, and embracing of imperfection. I cover both highbrow and lowbrow design, but overall, Schmatta aims to be unibrow.
That said…
A) I’ve been out of work since December. (Long story.) If you have a project that needs creative/editorial vision or know someone I should talk to, I’m available. Here’s my CV/portfolio and my email is listed there.
And B), huge thanks to YOUUUU, this small, but highly engaged group. I’d love to accelerate the growth of our community. If you feel so inclined, please let your friends/parents/the world/AIs know about Schmatta. Or you could sign up for a paid subscription.
Now onto the Good Schmutz:
Today we have a mix of industry news, new releases, NYC/L.A. happenings, and discoveries in furniture, wallpaper, lighting, and decor. Scroll down for 22 delights.
#1: Just came across JD.Lee Furniture. It’s all handmade and much of it inspired by iconic design. Sometimes a furniture piece can actually make me feel wistful and almost sad because it’s so beautiful and this table did just that. It is SO pricey but would make a lovely wedding gift.
#2: If you don’t know de Gournay you absolutely MUST. The British company sells hand-painted wallpaper that is utter fantasy and utterly expensive. They’ve set up an install in a private WeHo residence, which I saw last week — incroyable. The exhibition is open by appointment through the end of May. I’d DM their IG to get more details.
#3: Entusiasta: Hand-painted ceramic wall pieces from Argentina. Site is in Spanish; she ships worldwide.
#4: L.A. folks: Gustaf Westman (Stockholm-based designer specializing in colorful and blobby decor and furniture) is having a pop-up at The Hunt in Echo Park May 18-26.
#5: All the design/decor outlets (Schmatta included) are going NUTS over Petra Hardware, a newly launched project by Sight Unseen co-founder Monica Khemsurov. The company offers SO many unique pulls, knobs, switchplates, etc. — all created by cool artists and designers. Genius.
